C-47 Skytrain
The C-47 Skytrain is a military transport developed from the Douglas DC-3 airliner. Used extensively by the Allies in World War II, it remained in front line operations through the 1950's. The Skytrain was vital to the success of Allied campaigns, specially those at Guadalcanal and in the jungles of New Guinea and Burma where it made possible for Allied troops to counter the mobility of the Japanese army.
C-47s were also used to airlift supplies to the embattled American forces during the Battle of Bastogne. Its most influential role in military aviation was flying The Hump from India into China where the expertise gained was later used in the Berlin Airlift. A few remaining Skytrains are still in operation to this day.
